Things to do in Chiang Mai.

A quick list of the main activities and things to do in this town.Β

More a city holiday than a beach one. No beaches here but a town full of culture and authenticity built within four surrounding walls forming a square.

  • Temples
  • Markets
  • Shopping Malls
  • Mountains
  • Mae Rim activities
  • Cooking classes
  • Well being

  • Temples

These sacred spots can easily be missed if driving a scooter or being driven by tuktuk for those inside the square. Women must cover up to visit (chest, shoulders, legs) and scarves and shawls are nearly always provided at the entrance. When visiting the inside of any temples, shoes must be removed.

There are some amazing temples outside the square which you can get to by different means. I recommend hiring a scooter for your stay.

  • Markets

By day or by night, there are often markets scattered around throughout the week. The main ones are the Saturday and Sunday night markets. A real must do. The experience is always quite memorable.

TIPS: Crowded because popular, keep some water on you / keep an eye on your belongings / don’t buy at the 1st stall (sometimes you find cheaper further on / negotiate prices.

  • Shopping Malls

Sometimes they are brilliant places forΒ cooler temperatures. You can get hot walking around Chiang Mai with the heat, humidity and pollution so getting a break in one of the shopping malls can come in really nice. There are more or less 4 big ones, at each angle of the square. You can catch a tuktuk, walk or get there by scooter if you’ve hired one.Β Each one offers the same sort of entertainment: cinema, gyms, food, beauty, clothes…

TIPS: if you easily get cold, take a little top or jumper / especially for the cinema, it’s freezing.

  • Mountains

For this, you will need to go out of the square. Feasible by tuktuk or hired scooter. I really recommend hiring a scooter during your stay as tuktuks, despite being so cheap, will start to add up. And at the end of the day, you’ll actually spend more.

TIPS: hiring a scooter will end up being cheaper than tuktuks / have water on you.

  • Mae Rim activities
